This is the first book in the Major Quatermain series and it did not disappoint.
I really enjoyed the characters and their development, you get to know them more as the story goes on and both Major Quatermain and Hannah both have cheeky side that comes out every now and then. Both are quiet content in their how hum lives until they are thrown together to well save the world! (Well Hannah actually decides to come along for the ride whether Major Quatermain likes it or not lol) The pace was great and I enjoy how everything was revealed in a timely manner ie not rushed or too drawn out but how you would expect it to all unfold.
I look forward to he next book in the series and hope we also get to see Issac again and learn more about him too!

Major Allen Quatermain after having served in World War 2 has settled down to a mundane and slightly boring job at the Royal Military Academy at Sanhurst as a professor. One day he is approached by M12 and her Majesty's Life Guards and it is the start of his adventure. Hitler may be alive and it is Allen's job to find the spear before Hitler does. On the start of his adventure Allen Meets Hannah and whose father who has spent his life searching for the lance . Hannah's Father is Dr Julius Byrd and it has disappeared. It is thought that he has been kidnapped, But has he? Allen and Hannah team up and are soon on-board the Orient Express where they come under attack but an unknown assailant. They also meet up with some Nazi hunters who offer their assistance. Who will find the Lance first Hitler or Allen Quatermain? This fast paced action adventure with a bit of romance is a book once you start reading you won't want to put it down. I highly recommend this book. looking forward to the 2nd book in this series.

Major Allan Quatermann is a British Veteran of the Special Service Brigade and one day, he gets a surprised visit from M12 and Her Majesty Life Guards. He is very taken back as to why they want to talk to him. They tell him that they need his help to find a spear. But this is no ordinary spear. It is the spear (Holy Lance) that pierced Christ's side at the Crucifixion. There is a legend that tells that whoever possesses the spear and unlocks the spear's supernatural powers, it will give victory to who wields it. And whoever has the spear, has kidnapped, Julius Byrd, an expert on the spear.
Allan meets Dr. Hannah Byrd, who is just not a art historian but the daughter of Julius Byrd. Allan tells Hannah about the spear and about her father being kidnapped. Together Hannah and Allan embark on a trip to Istanbul to find the spear and Hannah's father.
J.R. Rain puts in so much intrigue, suspense and adventure into The Spear. Another great novel written by J.R. Rain that grabbed my attention and didn't let me go until I read the entire book !! The novel was so very well written, great characters and a very strong storyline that made this book such a great mystery story !!
I was provided with an ARC of this book for an honest review. First, while I noticed a few errors in grammar or spelling, it was edited much better than a lot of the more recent J.R. Rain books I have read, making it much easier to read.
When I first began to read it, I didn't think it would hold my interest. Then, after a bout of sickness, I decided to try again and found that it was a rather interesting book.
It would seem J.R. Rain is taking a page out of his mother's books about various Biblical artifacts and has written a book about the effort of one Dr. Julius Byrd historian/professor at Pembroke College, to try and find the Spear that was thrust into the side of Christ while he was on the cross. It is said to have the ability to provide the holder with supernatural power.
One, previously thought dead, dictator wants it badly so he can become ruler of the world. The teacher wants it because he wants to prove it exists and that he has not made it up. Then, he goes missing.
Major Allan (though at least once it is spelled Alan) Quatermain, of The Royal Military Academy, a military history professor, is enlisted to search for the missing professor. He starts by traveling to Pembroke College, which is locked when he finally arrives. He then returns to his alma mater, Magdalen College, in the same city as Pembroke and only a short walk away, knowing it is usually open until late and might have some guest rooms available. When he arrives he goes to the only room with a light to see if he can locate a janitor who can help him with a place to spend the night. There he meets Dr. Hannah Byrd, an art history professor, a beautiful woman and daughter of the missing Dr. Julius Byrd. When she learns that her father is believed to have been kidnapped by Nazis and Major Quatermain is going to try to find him, she insists that Major Quatermain allow her to assist him in locating her father.
They travel by plane and by the Orient Express to try and locate both Dr. Byrd and the Spear, if it even exists. There are several attempts on their lives. But, unknowingly, they are being followed by Jewish Nazi hunters who come to their rescue and with whom they form an alliance.
A most interesting topic with plenty of action and excitement and some romance.
Miss use of words, a "romance" that would have been best left out altogether. An ending that wrapped up too fast. I liked the concept, and the hero, hated the heroine. Save your money, get it for free if you can.
